How to grow seedlings

Take seeds with a harvest or release date of no more than two years. Place them in saline solution. To prepare it, you will need half a teaspoon of table salt and a glass of water. After 30-40 minutes, drain the water along with the floating seeds.

When planting, use only the material that remains at the bottom of the container. It is recommended to harden the seeds a week before planting. For this, the swollen seeds are placed in a refrigerator or buried in the snow for a week.

For growing seedlings, plastic boxes with holes in the bottom, peat pots are suitable. Add some soil from your plot to the seedling soil to facilitate the adaptation of plants when transplanting into a greenhouse or open ground.

Attention! To disinfect the garden soil, calcine it in the oven at 180-200 degrees for half an hour.

The following rules for growing seedlings must be observed:

  • sowing seeds to a depth of 1-2 cm;
  • timely watering;
  • temperature regime 20-22 degrees;
  • good illumination of boxes with seedlings;
  • maintaining a 16-hour daylight hours using artificial lighting;
  • covering the boxes with transparent polyethylene until the first shoots appear.

Pick the seedlings after the formation of the first two true leaves. This will accelerate plant growth and promote the development of a stronger root system. Start hardening the plants two weeks before planting in the garden. To do this, take out the boxes with seedlings outside for 3-4 hours every day.

Cultivation in the beds

At the end of May, after the end of the night frosts, transplant the seedlings to the garden. Prepare the soil in advance:

  • loosen;
  • remove weeds;
  • form holes;
  • add organic fertilizers to the soil.

For feeding at this stage, a yeast solution, an infusion of egg shells or rotten grass is suitable. Treat with insecticides before the tomatoes start blooming. This will protect them from aphids, parasites, caterpillars, slugs and spider mites. Mulching with sawdust, grass, hay will protect from the appearance of root rot.

Form a shrub with three stems for increased yield. Break off excess leaves and lower branches. Leave only the top three stepsons with flowers. Do not forget to feed the plants 2-3 times more during the growth and fruiting period.

Important... Large, heavy fruits growing in clusters are a big load on the stem and branches. Tie up shoots, put strong supports.

Outdoor and greenhouse cultivation

When cultivating the variety outdoors, pay special attention to watering, as these tomatoes do not tolerate drought. Water the tomatoes in moderation, only with warm water. The topsoil should dry out between waterings.

When greenhouse growing of Staroselskie tomatoes, provide constant ventilation. This will protect the plants from infections and fungal infections.

Diseases and pests

Tomato variety Staroselsky is quite resistant to the main diseases of the nightshade: verticillium, fusarium, tobacco mosaic. However, prevention is still indispensable. Before planting, the soil is spilled potassium permanganate solution or copper sulfate. Young plants are sprayed with phytosporin or another bio-preparation with antifungal effect.

Careful watering, loosening or mulching the soil, and removing weeds will protect you from root rot. The lower leaves on the bushes can also be removed. Industrial insecticides, infusion of celandine or onion husks will help against insect pests. They effectively destroy thrips, whitefly, spider mites.

Harvesting and application of the crop

Abundant friendly fruiting is the hallmark of this variety. You can harvest 5-6 kg of tomatoes from one square meter. They tolerate transportation well, are suitable for long storage fresh. Salt and pickle medium-sized fruits in jars. Use Staroselskie tomatoes for making lecho, ketchup, adjika, winter salads.

Pick ripe tomatoes immediately, do not leave them on the bush so that the process of ripening of new tomatoes is not inhibited. For home storage, choose greenish, unripe berries. At room temperature in a dark place, they will ripen and will lie for a long time.
